Chatbot vs. Conversational AI: What’s the Difference?

"Chatbot" describes the interface: a chat window where a user types and gets a reply. "Conversational AI" describes the underlying technology — natural language understanding and generation — that can power that interface. A chatbot can be rule-based or AI-powered; conversational AI is specifically the AI-powered kind.

The two terms get used almost interchangeably in marketing, but they describe different layers. A chatbot is the product surface — the widget or chat window a visitor interacts with. It can be built on simple keyword matching (a rule-based chatbot) or on an AI model that actually understands language (a conversational AI chatbot).

Conversational AI is the broader technology category: it covers understanding what someone means (not just the exact words they used), holding context across a conversation, and generating a natural-sounding reply. It can show up in a chat widget, a voice assistant, or a phone system — the chatbot is just one common place to use it.

When someone asks for an "AI chatbot" rather than just a "chatbot," they usually mean: a chat interface, powered by conversational AI, that actually understands what’s being asked rather than matching a script.
